A Journey Beyond High Performance

High performance, leadership, purpose, and faith are often seen as separate paths. However, in this episode, they come together powerfully. Dr. Jack Groppel shares a deeply personal story that goes beyond success. Instead, he explores identity, meaning, and transformation.

Although many chase achievement, few stop to question its true value. Therefore, this conversation invites you to reflect on what really matters.

From Achievement to Identity

From an early age, Jack was driven to prove himself. As a result, success became external, measurable, and constant. However, over time, that drive turned into what he calls “achievement addiction.”

Yet, despite reaching the highest levels in sports science and human performance, something was missing. In fact, success alone did not bring fulfillment. Therefore, the question became deeper: who are you beyond performance?

The Turning Point: Crisis and Reflection

In 1996, everything changed. During a serious health crisis, Jack was forced to slow down. At that moment, isolation created space for reflection.

As a result, he began to question his purpose, relationships, and beliefs. Moreover, this experience marked the beginning of a new path. Instead of chasing validation, he started searching for truth.

Curiosity, Fear, and Faith

Curiosity played a key role in that transformation. Not only did it drive learning, but it also shaped outcomes. As Jack explains, curiosity, combined with quality effort, leads to meaningful growth.

At the same time, fear became an important theme. During the conversation, both Jack and Sid reflect on fear through the lens of faith. For example, they reference moments from Easter, where fear is present, yet the message remains clear: do not be afraid.

Therefore, growth often begins where fear exists.

Mentorship and the Power of Words

Along the way, mentors made a lasting impact. In particular, one simple sentence changed Jack’s life. Because of that encouragement, he pursued a path in sports science that did not yet exist.

This shows that words matter. In fact, a single moment of belief can shape an entire future. Therefore, leadership is not only about performance, but also about lifting others.

 Fatherhood, Character, and Leadership

Later in life, fatherhood brought a new perspective. After adopting his son from China, Jack experienced a deeper understanding of love and responsibility.

However, his view on parenting is clear. He is not a fan of pushing performance in sport. Instead, he believes in being a great parent first. As a result, character becomes more important than achievement.

Because of this, leadership starts at home.

The Mountains Within

One of the most powerful symbols in this episode is Mount Kilimanjaro. Jack climbed it with his son. However, the real journey was internal.

In other words, the greatest challenges are not external. Instead, they are the ones we carry within. Therefore, success is no longer about proving yourself. It is about becoming who you are meant to be.

Pay-to-Play and Talent Access

First, Alex explains how the pay-to-play model shapes youth soccer. In many cases, families fund development pathways. Consequently, access depends on income. However, talent does not follow income. As a result, many players are filtered out early. In contrast, open systems allow broader access. Therefore, they capture more talent over time.

Incentives Drive the Game

Next, the discussion shifts to incentives. Every system rewards certain behaviors. In the U.S., participation generates revenue. Therefore, clubs focus on volume. However, performance is not strongly rewarded. As a result, competitive pressure is reduced. In contrast, European football aligns incentives with results. Thus, winning and losing carry real consequences.

Europe vs U.S.: Two Different Models

In Europe, football operates on merit. Promotion and relegation create urgency. Consequently, clubs must perform to survive. In addition, player development connects directly to competition. However, the U.S. follows a franchise model. Teams remain stable regardless of results. Therefore, risk is limited. As a result, intensity and accountability often decrease.

Global Comparisons: Money vs Culture

The conversation then expands globally. For example, countries with strong financial backing have invested heavily in football. However, results remain inconsistent. In contrast, nations like Brazil and Argentina continue to produce elite players. Although resources are limited, access is high. As a result, football becomes part of daily life. Therefore, culture and environment shape outcomes more than capital alone.

Building a Different Model

Alex also shares his work with Detroit Metro FC. His approach focuses on governance, access, and long-term structure. For instance, he explores models that remove bias and reduce financial barriers. As a result, more players can enter the system. However, this requires discipline and clarity. Therefore, building a credible club goes beyond short-term success.

The Future of U.S. Soccer

Finally, the discussion looks ahead. Can the U.S. system evolve? On the one hand, interest in soccer is growing. On the other hand, structural issues remain. Therefore, change must come from incentives, not messaging. If access improves and accountability increases, results can follow. Otherwise, the system will continue to produce the same outcomes.

In this episode of Pre-Zero Sports Talk, Sid Bensalah sits down with Scott Martin. He is an award-winning soccer coach, educator, and author of Play From Your Heart.

However, Scott’s journey is not defined by success alone. Instead, it is shaped by a life-changing moment. After a rare infection, he fell into a coma and lost both hands and parts of his feet.

As a result, everything changed. Not only his career, but also his identity.

Rebuilding Identity Through Adversity

After waking up, Scott faced a new reality. At first, the physical recovery was overwhelming. However, the deeper challenge was emotional and mental.

He had to rebuild confidence, purpose, and identity. In addition, he had to navigate grief, frustration, and uncertainty.

Yet, over time, he found a way forward. Step by step, he began to redefine what strength and resilience truly mean.

Coaching as Leadership

Scott shares a powerful philosophy. Coaching is not about control. Instead, it is about putting players in a position to learn.

Because of this, leadership becomes a shared experience. Players grow through trust, accountability, and confidence.

At the same time, Scott connects coaching to parenting. In both cases, the goal is not perfection. Rather, it is growth.

From Parenting to Purpose

In addition to coaching, Scott raised five adopted children. This experience shaped his perspective even further.

For example, he learned that structure matters. However, empathy matters just as much.

Therefore, leadership at home and on the field follows the same principles. Be present. Be honest. And most importantly, lead with care.

Returning to the Game

Eventually, Scott returned to soccer. However, this time, everything was different.

He coached with prosthetics. He led with lived experience. And most importantly, he inspired through action.

As a result, he guided a group of underestimated players to an undefeated championship season. This was not just about winning. Instead, it was about belief.

Adaptive Sports and Representation

The conversation also explores adaptive sports. While progress has been made, gaps still exist.

For instance, Paralympic athletes often receive less media coverage and sponsorship. However, their level of dedication is just as high.

Therefore, Scott shares his perspective on visibility, equality, and respect in sport. In doing so, he challenges how we view performance and recognition.

Scott also discusses his book, Play From Your Heart. Through writing, he reflects on his journey with honesty and depth.
