In this milestone 100th episode of Pre-Zero Sports Talk, Sid Bensalah sits down with Dr. Jack Groppel, a globally recognized sports scientist, human performance expert, and author of Mountains Within, for a powerful and deeply human conversation about success, identity, and transformation.

A Journey Beyond High Performance

High performance, leadership, purpose, and faith are often seen as separate paths. However, in this episode, they come together powerfully. Dr. Jack Groppel shares a deeply personal story that goes beyond success. Instead, he explores identity, meaning, and transformation.

Although many chase achievement, few stop to question its true value. Therefore, this conversation invites you to reflect on what really matters.

From Achievement to Identity

From an early age, Jack was driven to prove himself. As a result, success became external, measurable, and constant. However, over time, that drive turned into what he calls “achievement addiction.”

Yet, despite reaching the highest levels in sports science and human performance, something was missing. In fact, success alone did not bring fulfillment. Therefore, the question became deeper: who are you beyond performance?

The Turning Point: Crisis and Reflection

In 1996, everything changed. During a serious health crisis, Jack was forced to slow down. At that moment, isolation created space for reflection.

As a result, he began to question his purpose, relationships, and beliefs. Moreover, this experience marked the beginning of a new path. Instead of chasing validation, he started searching for truth.

Curiosity, Fear, and Faith

Curiosity played a key role in that transformation. Not only did it drive learning, but it also shaped outcomes. As Jack explains, curiosity, combined with quality effort, leads to meaningful growth.

At the same time, fear became an important theme. During the conversation, both Jack and Sid reflect on fear through the lens of faith. For example, they reference moments from Easter, where fear is present, yet the message remains clear: do not be afraid.

Therefore, growth often begins where fear exists.

Mentorship and the Power of Words

Along the way, mentors made a lasting impact. In particular, one simple sentence changed Jack’s life. Because of that encouragement, he pursued a path in sports science that did not yet exist.

This shows that words matter. In fact, a single moment of belief can shape an entire future. Therefore, leadership is not only about performance, but also about lifting others.

Fatherhood, Character, and Leadership

Later in life, fatherhood brought a new perspective. After adopting his son from China, Jack experienced a deeper understanding of love and responsibility.

However, his view on parenting is clear. He is not a fan of pushing performance in sport. Instead, he believes in being a great parent first. As a result, character becomes more important than achievement.

Because of this, leadership starts at home.

The Mountains Within

One of the most powerful symbols in this episode is Mount Kilimanjaro. Jack climbed it with his son. However, the real journey was internal.

In other words, the greatest challenges are not external. Instead, they are the ones we carry within. Therefore, success is no longer about proving yourself. It is about becoming who you are meant to be.

Final Reflection

This episode is more than a conversation about performance. Rather, it is about transformation, resilience, and purpose.

So, whether you are an athlete, a leader, or simply searching for meaning, this conversation will challenge your perspective.

Because in the end, success is not what you achieve. It is who you become.

Timestamps

<itunes:summary>In this milestone 100th episode of Pre-Zero Sports Talk, Sid Bensalah sits down with Dr.

Are men facing a modern masculinity crisis?

In Episode 95 of Pre-Zero Sports Talk, Sid Bensalah sits down with Maxim Shapiro, men’s purpose coach and founder of Forward Motion Coaching, for a raw and honest conversation about depression, identity, effort, and reclaiming authentic self-leadership.

Maxim shares how years of drifting, negative self-talk, and playing it safe led to deep dissatisfaction. In his early 40s, a “jarring awakening” pushed him to move from Massachusetts to California, start a business, commit to a long-term relationship, and come off antidepressants. What followed was not comfort, but growth.

This episode explores:

• Why many men feel lost or displaced in today’s culture
• The difference between the true self and the performed self
• Effort vs results and redefining success
• Loving as effort and leadership as presence
• Digital culture, dopamine, and declining real community
• Rebuilding belonging through hard, shared practices like jiu-jitsu
• Practical steps to move from stuck to alive

Maxim explains that self-respect grows from consistent effort, not outcomes. Big goals matter even without guarantees. Authenticity requires stillness, breathing, intuition, and the courage to say what is true.

00:00 – Weather Check & Setting the Conversation
<itunes:summary>Are men facing a modern masculinity crisis?

Diagnosed with advanced metastatic cancer, Matt shares how suffering reshaped his leadership and strengthened his sense of purpose.

At first, the diagnosis brought shock and fear. However, over time, pain became a teacher. As a result, his mindset shifted. Through faith, family, and community, Matt learned how to stay grounded during dark seasons. Moreover, he explains why hope is not passive but intentional.

Throughout the episode, Matt draws from personal stories and biblical examples such as Joseph and David. In doing so, he explores courage, emotional growth, and the discipline required to keep moving forward. Meanwhile, he reflects on how adversity can refine character rather than destroy it.

Matt also introduces his EPIC framework and discusses the mission behind his cancer support foundation, Battle for the Bulge. Together, these ideas show how leadership and vulnerability can coexist. In addition, he speaks openly about marriage, emotional intimacy, fatherhood, and why suffering often shapes legacy.

Whether you are facing hardship or guiding others through it, this conversation remains raw, honest, and full of hope.
